Magazine Cover Designs

These are some of the Magazine Covers I have designed at Infomedia 18 as an Art Director.

AV MAX redesign

One of the most interesting projects , thanks to Prashant Narekuli (Business Head : Better Photography, AV Max and Better Interiors). The challenge was to transform the brand identity of the magazine from that of a trade magazine to an aspirational/lifestyle magazine for audiophiles and Hi-Fi enthusiasts.
Since I had already worked on the redesign of a special interest consumer magazine like OVERDRIVE, my understanding of the target audience for a similar magazine had evolved by then.
The strategy followed for the redesign process was as simple as this:

* Review purpose, or mission, statement; decide if it should stay as is or be updated.

* Define what distinguishes this magazine from other magazines.

* Define editorial voice.

* Establish a goal for features.

* Establish a goal for each department and other standing items (cover, table of contents, etc.).

* Review progress with all editors and art director.

* Decide which departments to keep, change, drop or add.

* Determine how all parts will work together (e.g., text, titles, photos, illustrations and design).

* Discuss the use of opening pages and spreads with edit and art staff, as well as pacing and flow between parts and within parts.

* Decide on typefaces, colors and an art philosophy that fit the magazine's voice and style.

* Write samples of all new departments or article types to see how text and the new design work together.

* Decide if a new logo is necessary. If so, begin working on it.

* Review the sample design; decide what steps still need to be taken.

* Adjust the budget and schedule as necessary.

* Assign the first "new" issue.

* Adjust the new design as it is edited and designed, and then review it after printing.

* Develop new work habits that fit the new design.

Well, the design team initaially had some problems with the copy-editors... but natural. But once the fist couple of issues came out, everything was more or less in place.

Thanks to Mahesh Jadhav, Swapnil Raje, Sumit Bhonsle and most of all, Prashant Narekuli for the journey...
